AQIP communication around the college

Student Print Solutions

The Student Print Solutions initiative has been a long time coming. The amount of printing waste has been growing at an alarming rate for the last several years. As everyone is aware, the pilot is about to begin in January.

The mission of this project has two parts, to control the waste and help the college with green alternatives, and communicate an awareness of the waste and printing abuse that was going on. The awareness factor alone will help a great deal in eliminating much of the problem. Owens Community College was one of the only colleges that was not charging for copies from all of the research that was done. Based on the information that has been published how do you feel about the Print Solutions Initiative?

Anything that is “greener” is good for me! I can forsee that this will lead to an increase in students emailing me their assignments so that the printing burden is shifted to me (at least if I want to print them and write feedback on their papers). So I’d better get organized and use Blackboard because I lose things in my inbox… My daughter at Marquette Univ submits ALL her assignments either online or by email, so I guess we’re just catching up with the rest of the world.

I think that is a good idea. It will cut down on the paper waste that we experience in our common computer labs.

The new “student print solutions” is a great idea and long overdue as far as I’m concerned. I am looking forward to seeing how it goes beginning in January. Anything that can minimize waste and be more economically responsible is a winner!

I’m very excited about the inception of this project. I know the college community will embrace it as a positive step! I just wanted to comment to Mary K…. Just a thought.. if students email you a word document, or a google dox paper, you can use the Comments feature to get feedback to them. You don’t necessarily have to print up all those papers. Perhaps the Faculty Development Center could host a series of training sessions that might help.

    Mary K. and Cathie K-L,
My students have been submitting their assignments as Word docs online for the last ten years. I never print them; I grade them using AutoCorrect, but some of my colleagues use the Comment feature in Word. It takes grading a batch of papers for the first time using one of these methods to establish a list of typical comments that you can then personalize for students, but from then on, you only have to add new comments or revise existing ones. It makes grading easier and my students can read all my comments rather than try to decipher my handwriting.
