    Hi,
I just read the budget forum powerpoint and it looks grim.

    Couple of cost saving ideas:

Has anyone recently contacted the various large companies we do business with i.e. Office Max, Metzgers, FEDEX, etc.? Are we still getting the best discounts/rebates available? Economy is tough, can we get better pricing from these companies? Put the squeeze,on them?

Would it be possible for employees to pay a bit more for their benefits and lessen the expense to the school?

Volunteer furloughs during slow periods i.e. summer?

After class, require instructors to shut off the lights when they leave the room?

Is there a way to promote the CFPA to encourage our faculty to involve their students more? Example – Sr. Helen Prejean, Dead Man Walking: The Journey Continues. This nun was an insightful, powerful speaker. Our faculty members attended; why not their classes? UT and BGSU students attended; why not our students? This would have been a great talk on several levels for sociology majors. I discussed, with Barbara Barken, lab fees to cover the cost of student attendance for performances. She said she already has a voucher program in place for students and she keeps the cost low. Why are faculty not utilizing this opportunity to add yet another layer of education upon their students and make them attend? The attendance of students at the CFPA would fiscally help to offset the expense of the speakers. Students would become more socially and scholastically involved. Students would receive a better, more rounded education, and in turn, possibly strengthen OCC alumni ties.

If I think of anything else, I will keep you posted.

    Thank you for your time,

    Becky Drayton
