Boil Water Advisory – Health Technologies and Bicentennial Hall

Due to the water main break outside the Health Technologies and Bicentennial Hall a boil water advisory has been issued for these two buildings until a water test can be completed.  Facilities Services will request the test on Wednesday but it is not clear when the test will be conducted.

As a precaution, all drinking fountains in Bicentennial Hall and Health Technologies will be bagged off and signs posted on all bathroom doors that they may use the facilities including hand sinks, but may NOT drink the water until the water tests within acceptable levels.  Bottled water has been distributed throughout the floors near drinking fountain stations for consumption.

Once the test passes Facilities Services will notify the campus community through Onews and all signs will be removed and the drinking fountains returned to normal service.

New Students’ Self-reported Study Skills

  • 39% don’t get a lot of reading the textbook when trying to learn something
  • 47% have trouble getting things into memory
  • 75% have a hard time concentrating when they are studying
  • 28% don’t believe that test grades are a true reflection of their knowledge
  • 54% get nervous or freeze up on tests
  • 30% do not use a calendar to keep track of events and activities

SculptureX 2018: Igniting Change Exhibit in the Walter E. Terhune Gallery

The Terhune Gallery is exhibiting SculptureX 2018: Igniting Change, featuring the works of Kate Levy and Shanna Merola beginning August 27. The artists have backing through Kickstarter Arts to raise funds but before their campaign launches they will display their inaugural exhibition at the Owens Gallery. The show will continue through October 27.

The exhibition titled “Oil + Water”, uses their combined photographs from the past five years to make connections between the oil and gas industry, privatization of water, and increased militarization of local police and military. They have documented the water struggle in Detroit and Flint, Standing Rock, the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy, New Orleans post Katrina and the Bakken Shale fracking boom in North Dakota.

Levy’s video work has been featured on Al Jazeera and Democracy Now. Merola has been featured in Interview Magazine, and many others. Together and separately they’ve also made videos on the water crisis and environmental justice. As photographers, videographers and investigative journalists they are interested in adding multimedia dimensions to the show.

403(b) and 457 Retirement Planning – Toledo-area Campus

Did you know that as an Owens employee you are able to put money away toward retirement on a pre-tax basis? You can save toward a 403(b) and/or 457 Supplemental Retirement Account. Investing in SRAs is a benefit covered in Sections 403 (b) and 457 of the Internal Revenue Service Code.

In 2018 most employees are able to contribute up to $18,500 for those under the age of 50 and $24,500.00 for those 50 and over to a SRA plan. The minimum contribution per pay period is $15.00.

Rick Clark from AXA will be conducting 15-minute individual information meetings from 11:30 a.m. – 2 p.m. on the Toledo-area Campus, September 13 and 14 in Human Resources. If interested, please contact Patti Watson at x7692 to reserve your spot for an individual meeting by Friday, September 10.

Drone Golf Ball Drop at the Owens Alumni Association’s Golf Classic

Would you like to help Owens students who are most in need?  So does the Alumni Association. Thanks to the support of Owens faculty and staff and our sponsors over the past 15 years, the Alumni Association’s Golf Classic with Drone Golf Ball Drop has raised funds for scholarships and we have distributed more than $121,000 directly to students. The Alumni Association is committed to helping our students succeed through financial and program support.

We need your help with our September 17, 2018 Golf Classic fundraising goal of $60,000. Ideal for the non-golfer, we are hosting the 2nd annual Drone Golf Ball Drop. This is a unique way for faculty and staff to support scholarships without swinging a club.

A $20 raffle ticket (golf ball) gives you a 1 in 400, or better, chance of winning the $1,000 grand prize. There will be a $500 and $250 prize, as well as gift prizes. If you want to see the Drone Golf Ball Drop in person, a $35 raffle ticket (golf ball) includes lunch at the beautiful Belmont Country Club. You do not need to be present to win.
