Green Industry Summer Session

Tuesday, July 30th, 2019

This horticulture event includes different speakers from Ohio State Extension and Owens in nine different sessions regarding landscape plants, pest, and maintenance practices. Many sessions count for CEU’s.  Employers should bring employees to benefit their businesses, homeowners can come as well. Opening Week 2019

Dear Faculty and Staff,

We are pleased to launch the new 2019-2020 academic year with Opening Week activities: the August 19 All Campus Meetings and the August 21 Teaching and Learning Faculty Symposium.  Special thanks to the Owens Faculty Association for providing the lunch for the participants attending the symposium.

Kudos! to Dr. Denise Smith and Erica Parish and the faculty team for inviting Dr. Corey Seemiller from Wright State University, a researcher and author on Generation Z and student leadership competencies, to be our keynote speaker on Thursday, August 22.

Small Gap in Course Completion Rates for Web vs. Lecture Sections

Friday, July 26th, 2019

When special approval sections are excluded, such as those offered off campus for CCP and union students, there is only a small gap in completion rates between web and lecture sections. Although the gap widened slightly between Academic Year 2018 and 2019, this was due to a rise in completion rates for lecture sections. Completion rates for web sections remained the same.

Kick Off to Caring Backpack Event – August 7

Owens Community College has the pleasure of hosting the United Way of Toledo annual “Kick Off to Caring” backpack event on August 7 from 8-9:30 a.m. in the Student Health and Activities Center. There are many ways to support this event. Please consider joining 1500 community and campus volunteers to pack school supplies in backpacks for local students in need. Important Payroll and Human Resources Deadline Change

Effective Monday August 5, 2019, for the August 9 Payroll.

Beginning with the August 9, 2019 payroll, the payroll deadlines are changing to Monday at 10 a.m.

Paper timesheets and timecards, including emailed versions sent to payroll@owens.edu, Employment Recommendation forms (ERs) and Leave forms must be turned in by Monday at 10 a.m. or as noted on the payroll calendars online.

Safe Zone Trainings – Toledo and Findlay

The Center for Campus and Community Connections and Owens Pride Club are offering a Safe Zone training for any and all members of the Owens community who have not previously attended.

Upon completion of this interactive two-hour training, participants will receive a Safe Zone postcard to display in your office or cubicle to publicly advertise your “SAFE ZONE”. Safe Zones are safe spaces for GLBTQ+ students, employees and allies.

Please join us to expand the Safe Zone initiative at Owens Community College.

Welcome Week Wayfinding Tables

As part of Welcome Week, Wayfinding Tables will be set up outside in key campus locations in an effort to better direct students. Volunteers are needed to assist our students and guests to provide them with a welcoming experience. This is a great opportunity to interact with students and show them how much we value them and want them to be successful at Owens.

Toledo-area Campus

The Wayfinding Tables will be set up outside in these locations:

  • Between College Hall and Administration Hall
  • Near Heritage Hall

(In the event of inclement weather, the tables will be moved inside in these same general locations.)

The Wayfinding Tables will be up Monday, August 26 and Tuesday, August 27 at the following times each day:

8:30 – 10:30 a.m.

10:30 a.m. – 12: 30 p.m.

12:30 – 2:30 p.m.

We are asking for volunteers for two-hour shifts. If you cannot do two hours, we ask that you “share a shift” with another member of your department and each do one hour in the two-hour block. If you can do more than two hours, that would be great as well! Please wear an Owens shirt or a red shirt to help identify yourself.

Owens Market Share of Direct from High School Students Rose in 2018

Although the overall number of high school students in the Owens legal service district who enroll at an Ohio public college or university immediately following graduation declined between 2017 and 2018, the proportion enrolling at Owens rose from 16.7% to 19.1%. This increase was primarily driven by an increase in market share within Lucas County.

Office of Veterans Services Update

At this time, we are experiencing transition in our Office of Veterans Services.  Our commitment and support to our student veterans, active duty military service members and their dependents remains our number one priority.

For the next several weeks the Veterans Student Lounge and computer lab within the Office of Veterans Services (room 105, Veterans Hall, Toledo-area Campus) will be open Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. – 5 p.m. for regular use.

The office will be staffed from 12 – 4 p.m., Monday through Friday, for general questions and support.  Jessica Ruffner, Manager of Prior Learning Assessment, will be present during these hours to provide direct customer service.   In addition, Cindy Charlton, Associate Registrar, will be our School Certifying Official (SCO) during this time of transition.

Students who have specific questions may contact vets@owens.edu for assistance. This email account is being monitored and answers will be provided.

Students on the Findlay-area Campus and Downtown Learning Center, may visit the Office of Veterans Services on the Toledo-area Campus during the hours of 12 – 4 p.m. for general assistance, or email vets@owens.edu with specific questions.
