Spring 2020 Work and Play Brochure Ideas Welcome

The brochure planning team at Workforce & Community Services is working on the course content for the January through April 2020 Work & Play brochure and would love to hear your ideas. If there is a class you wish would be offered, have an idea for a class you would like to teach, or know someone that has a class/hobby they’d like to teach, please contact Jaime Wineland at x7320 or jaime@owens.edu by September 17. Enter to Win Free U.S. Air Force Shades of Blue Jazz Ensemble Tickets

Wednesday, August 28th, 2019

All College employees are eligible to win free tickets to the U.S. Air Force Shades of Blue Jazz Ensemble performance at 3 p.m. Sunday, September 8 at the Marathon Performing Arts Center in Findlay.

Comprised of musicians from the USAF Band of Flight (Wright-Patterson AFB, Ohio) and the USAF Band of Mid-America (Scott AFB, Illinois), the ensemble will perform a big band concert featuring the music of Glenn Miller and other big band era favorites.

To enter, email andrew_woodard@owens.edu and type “USAF” in the subject line by 1 p.m. Thursday, August 29. Only one entry per person. Winners will be selected by random draw from all entries received and then contacted. Winners’ names also will be published in Onews.

As a supporter of veterans initiatives, the College is a sponsor of the ensemble’s appearance.

Update on the Office of Veterans Services

At this time, we are experiencing transition in our Office of Veterans Services.  Our commitment and support to our student veterans, active duty military service members and their dependents remains our number one priority.

While we work through this time of transition, student veterans may not yet have their Veteran Book Stipend with which they are able to purchase books and supplies.  Processing the Fall 2019 student veteran certifications as they are submitted by students is a top priority.  We ask for your continued support of our students who may not yet have their veteran book stipend during this time of transition.

Students who have specific questions may contact vets@owens.edu for assistance. This email account is being monitored and answers will be provided.

Advanced Manufacturing Training Center Ceremonial Groundbreaking – August 28

All College employees are invited to the Advanced Manufacturing Training Center ceremonial groundbreaking event at 10 a.m. Wednesday, August 28 on the Toledo-area Campus. Hard hat tours and refreshments will follow the brief ceremony, which will include a special announcement by a major business partner.

Workplace Safety Advocates for Mental Health

The Office of Workplace Safety and Health is promoting awareness with September being National Suicide Prevention Month. Owens Degrees and Certificates Increased in Academic Year 2019

KNOWLEDGE ABOUT THE COLLEGE FROM INSTITUTIONAL RESEARCH

Owens awarded a total of 1,571 degrees and certificates in Academic Year 2019. This number is up from the 1,381 awarded in 2018 and 1,554 in 2017.

Arts Performance Series Welcomes ‘GRUBS’

The Music Business Technology Portfolio I class presents the Grande Royale Ükulelists of the Black Swamp – “GRUBS” – at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, September 28 as the opening act in the Accent on the Arts 2019-20 concert series.

The Grande Royale Ükulelists of the Black Swamp are a quartet who sing and play all kinds of music on all kinds of ukuleles. Admission is free for the performance in the Center for Fine and Performing Arts Theatre.

Music Business Technology students design, book, promote and present the Accent on the Arts concert series each academic year. For more information, please visit www.owens.edu/arts.

Requisition and/or Travel Reimbursement Training

The Controller’s Office will be holding a training session on the Toledo-area Campus regarding entering and approving requisitions and POs in Banner 9 as well as Banner Self-Service. Also, we will go over how to fill out a travel reimbursement form. Any employees who want to learn more about these is welcome to attend. The training session will be held in CH 209 on September 17 from 9 – 10:30 a.m.

Department of Public Safety Training Session – August 14

Thursday, August 1st, 2019

Dear Owens Community College employees and students:

The College’s Department of Public Safety, in conjunction with Bowling Green State University’s Department of Public Safety, will be conducting an active shooter training session for Department of Public Safety personnel on August 14, 2019. This training will be held at Bicentennial Hall, between the hours of 8:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. During this time, Bicentennial Hall will be closed except for authorized personnel participating in the training.

This training is part of the Owens Community College Police Department’s continued efforts to maintain the highest standards of safety training and readiness to ensure a safe and secure environment for our students, faculty, staff, and visitors.

During this training exercise on August 14, there will be numerous police and emergency vehicles present, along with police personnel.  Please do not be alarmed by the number of police and emergency vehicles which will be on site.
