Blackboard Bootcamp Sessions

This one-day boot camp concentrates on four popular trainings requested by instructors. Feel free to attend all four, or select sessions you are most interested in. These training sessions will be condensed and fast-paced, so come prepared to jump right into the material!

Introduction to Blackboard’s Layout: (10 – 10:45 a.m.)

Blackboard Learn is the learning management system (LMS) software we use at Owens. Many students anticipate the use of this software with their college course and the content in the course be presented online. For instructors, it is important to become aware of our LMS, its presentation, and layout for higher education. This training presents the basic components and features of this learning management system, such as Blackboard’s course menu, content and tool areas, as well as a description of the course tools and essential commands.

Course Copy/Export-Import Courses: (11 – 11:30 a.m.)

Instructors who have created courses from a practice shell or may instruct an identical course in the future may wish to use the course copy tool in Blackboard. Participants are be introduced to the steps to using the course copy tool, and complete a course copy.

Participants will also generate an export package file from an existing Blackboard course shell, downloading the file package to a computer or external drive, then import the file package to a new Blackboard course shell.

Grade Center – Organization and Weights: (11:45 a.m. to 12:45 p.m.)

After adding many grade columns to a course, it may be necessary to organize, or reorganize the grade center columns during a grading period. Participants will be able to identify how to access the Full Grade Center, use the Manage command, and Course Organization tool to move grade columns, assign categories, show/hide grade columns, ‘freeze’ columns, and delete grade columns in bulk.

Participants will also use categories to assign grade columns to weights which are added the Weighted Total Column to ways demonstrate course grade weights and categories. (Participants should bring a copy of their syllabus with their course weights, along with the list of assignments for the semester)

Respondus 4.0: Bring Your Own PC Device (1 – 2 p.m.)

Many instructors have pre-existing MS Word document test files and wish to convert them to Blackboard. Respondus 4.0 Campuswide is a software program available to instructors through the Faculty Resources as a download to personal computers. Owens offers Respondus 4.0 Campuswide through each computer’s software center.

In this session, participants will view how to convert and code an existing Word or Text test document to Respondus 4.0, install Respondus 4.0, link and use Respondus 4.0 to connect to instructor’s Blackboard courses, create and edit a test, preview Respondus test files, as well as publish and retrieve exams, tests, and pools from Blackboard.
